[ghacks] Priv8 adds sandboxed tabs to Firefox

Freewheeling spot to chew the fat on anything cryptostorm-related that doesn't fit elsewhere (i.e. support, howto, &c.). Criticism & praise & brainstorming & requests for explanation... this is where it goes when it's hot & ready for action! :-)

[ghacks] Priv8 adds sandboxed tabs to Firefox

Postby parityboy » Thu Dec 18, 2014 3:50 pm

The new Firefox add-on Priv8 adds sandboxed tabs to the web browser using the security model of Firefox OS. It enables you to run select tabs in a sandbox which separates it and its data from the rest of the browser and other tabs. Please note that it has been released as a proof of concept right now.

Oh wow! I have to take a closer look on that one! Sandboxing isn't the holy grail as many exploits used for sandbox breakouts proof but it certainly adds a somewhat useful extra layer of security if done right.

@Desu

Yeah, it certainly looks interesting. :) I'm not entirely sure how these sandboxes work, but in seems to be primarily storage-based, in terms of the location of cookies, history etc. What I would like to see is cascaded network and security preferences, where for example you can specify that a sandbox can use a local I2P proxy, while another sandbox might use Tor and other sandboxes inherit the global settings.
