Ok, well in my absence some of the tech staff got tired of waiting for "someone" to update the old forum style. Why update it? Because, sadly, it was written for an older rev of phpBB and nobody was maintaining it - so with each new release of phpBB, it got a bit more out of alignment with the core package and more and more little annoying bugs showed up. We patched a few, ignored a few... but in the end we're not in the business of maintaining forum style templates and it's just not going to get much staff time allocation.
So we've talked about changing the style, and I think someone asked if the members here had any suggestions. But, understandably, other issues are a bigger priority and so the style thing just falls through the cracks. It happens.
Someone, who will go unnamed to protect the guilty, made a wise choice: update the style with whatever strikes his/her fancy. If people hate it, well perhaps they'll be motivated to suggest better ones! Gotta admit, it's an effective trick - not one I'd condone, but hey I wasn't around and so it goes...
Thus, here's the deal: ANYONE
can - and is encouraged to - recommend a different/better style than this current one. So long as it's current with the current phpBB build, we'll load 'er up and give it a try. It's not a great deal of work. We do want to stay with one style, versus letting everyone choose their own, as that can become a maintenance nightmare. But, within that, please do find something cool and we'll post it to production for testing for a day or three.
Also, remember we can modify everything about the styles: they're just CSS. So, for example, someone (<ahem> Graze) on a dare "pink-ified" some of the text on this style, because he didn't think we'd let him do it. You can see the results
Anyway, it's all easy to modify (within reason) - especially colours for fonts and backgrounds and stuff. If you want those changed, get us a hex value for the one you suggest (some of us are colourblind - as you can likely guess from the colour choices around here) and we can do the CSS updates. Heck, show yourself as too
competent & we'll stick you with a permissions mask that allows you to mod the styles yourself, directly. Problem solved.
There's a bunch of cool styles out there for phpBB - too many, almost, as it can become overwhelming to even look thru them. Particularly for those of us with not design skills, it's all a bit much. But I am sure folks here have some expertise, and can help point in the right direction. We're pretty flexible in terms of what works best - if everyone likes it, then it's good. That's the standard, basically.
Thanks for helping - and for appreciating the evil cleverness of updating to a freaky style in order to motivate community input
