Question about openvpn and username

Postby hulltech_unseen » Mon Apr 18, 2016 12:56 pm

I have had a difficult time of getting my Asus RT-AC68W to connect to Cryptostorm. Do you need to create any folders to put your hashed token. I was curious if I wanted to store my username on a Usb key if it would work.
auth-user-pass /jffs/password.txt. (I think I would put the path to the Usb drive before the /)

Does that sound correct.

Have you turned on JFFS? You've not mentioned the firmware you use, but on Tomato Shibby it needs to be formatted and turned on. You then put your text file within /jffs (hashed token on first line, password on line below.)

I've never used a usb to hold my passwords, but if you read up on CIFS I think that may be the direction you need to go in to make it work. If your firmware does that, that is.

My advice would be to use /jffs.

I couldn't figure out how to access the jffs partition on my AdvancedTomato router.
So right now, I'm using a USB flash drive to store the password.txt file. Tell Tomato to access the username and password from there:

Custom Configuration (in OpenVPN client section / Advanced tab)

Code: Select all

auth-user-pass /tmp/mnt/THENAMEOFYOURUSBDRIVE/password.txt

works.

That easy, eh? Cool.

As for jffs, have a look under 'Administration'.

I am using Asus Merlin's firmware. I have tried Asus, tomato, and Dd-wrt. I have not tried to make a folder in jffs, I really don't know how to do that.

Yes, I know how to enable jffs but not how to access jffs to put the password.txt into it. That's why I use the USB thumb drive.

I've tried to access my router via SSH via Terminal (to be able to connect to jffs):

But it doesn't accept my router password when I'm asked about it. Hmm

Oh right. Hmmm indeed... My first thoughts when confronted with that would be -

Is SSH enabled?
Is 'allow wireless access' enabled? (if applicable)
Am I using the right username/password? (mebbe try new combo)
Did I do a hard reset when I first installed the firmware?
Are iptables in the way?

Beyond that, dunno mate. Sorry.

@hulltech_unseen
That'd be

Code: Select all

mkdir
followed by your chosen name :)

New user/password combo did the trick. Thanks!

You're welcome, glad you sorted it :)

Another little tip, if you're interested. Over-clocking seems to work very well on this router. I've had mine (RT-AC68U) 'turned up to 11' for about a year and it's nice and stable with no overheating problems. Clocked to 1200/800 it gives about 5Mbps more than base through OpenVPN...ish or thereabouts. I'd suggest you find out what bootloader is on yours first, mind, and read up a little. There seems to be variation in top memory speed (the 800 may have to be lower)

(Tools - System Commands)

Code: Select all

nvram set clkfreq=1200,800 && nvram commit

Comes into affect after a reboot.

There's a few threads out there on various forums about this.

I have tried cryptostorm paid servers , crypto free servers, and vpnbook. I was able to connect with vpnbook. the only difference was the vpnbook file was a .ovpn extension. Any suggestions?

I was able to get it to connect on a few different .ovpn finally. I did run into a issue where Google chrome would show my real ip address. Is the an easy way to set up if your vpn goes down it will shut down the internet.

Do a search on 'webRTC'. Then use Firefox, after turning it off in about:config.

Then have a sob about how fucking fucked all the fucking browsers are.

Still a problem? Read about DNS.
