Expired Tokens Not Expiring?

Postby parityboy » Sun Mar 09, 2014 10:17 pm

Hello --

A token which I purchased a month ago has recently run out. If I try to connect to the Iceland and Germany exit nodes, I get:

Code: Select all

AUTH: Received control message: AUTH_FAILED

as expected. However, this same token works perfectly well on the Canada and USA exit nodes; I'm connected to the Canada exit node as I'm typing this. I'm guessing that there is an issue (i.e. large time delay) between the MongoDB shards in North America and the ones in Europe, or perhaps they run the validation sweep at the same local time every day.

I just though I'd let the team know. :)

And... it's up to me to reply.

Basically, the whole thing is setup different than most VPNs, in that we don't have a central customer database. The side effect of this is we have lots of little databases with the token hashes in them, and ancillary data. We use "replication" to keep those in sync with each other, which is a bit of a side issue, but it basically means the databases are supposed to talk to one another and agree on start dates and stuff, but obviously there's an issue in there with that. Our tech team will have to take a peek at that.

I _believe_ that all start dates are UTC, but I would have to further ask the neck beards here.

Thanks!

@Graze

Many thanks for the reply. Just to add to this, I have noticed occasionally that connecting to the Canada cluster with this expired token will fail first time, and then succeed on the second attempt. It may be that some shards on the cluster are in sync and others are not. The USA node connects with no failures whatsoever.

Either way, the token is definitely out of date and unauthorised, and yet still works on the North American clusters.
