Newbie help

Postby dustmen » Mon May 07, 2018 12:40 am

Hello everybody,
So first things first I'm new into this kind of stuff so I'm looking for your adivce guys.

Today I decided to join cryptostorm network. I decided to download OpenVPN software beforehand and put server configs from cryptostorm's github (https://github.com/cryptostorm/cryptost ... tion_files) I downloaded only windows folder, as I use W8.1.
I noticed some connection issues (few servers didn't worked properly I guess) so I decided to download Cryptostorm Client. I noticed that sometimes certain websites have some DNS problems when I close the client. When I turn back client (but won't reconnect) it's fine again. Similar problem appears when I connect to cryptostorm server (I clicked activation link from email and I wasn't able to go through). Perhaps it has something to do with options.

So my general questions are:
- what does connecting to random port option actually do?
- which options from security tab may mess with my connections? I don't understand too well any of them really and I'm not sure in which cases they're best to use.
- what are differences between OpenVPN and cryptostorm client? Does client provide more secure connection?
- voodoo and standard connection - differences?

Thanks in advance for any replies and attention to my post.

@OP

1. The random port option enables clients to get past firewalls which block OpenVPN either by blocking its usual port number (1194) or by blocking UDP traffic on port 443 (HTTPS uses TCP on port 443).

2. I'd guess DNSCrypt would be the culprit here, since it is the one option which (temporarily) alters the DNS configuration of your machine.

3. The client is more convenient - it only connects to Cryptostorm exit nodes and you don't have to faff about with configuration files.

4. Voodoo connections are used to put you hop step away from the actual exit node, in order to mitigate a network sniffer monitoring traffic to/from the exit node and trying to perform some kind of correlation based on traffic patterns. The exit node sees the voodoo node IP rather than your IP.

Thanks for reply @parityboy, I've learned few things recently for my humble beginnings.

Generally speaking everything's fine for me and I'm satisfied overall but sometimes I turn off VPN when I'm going to play online games for better connection.
And regarding DNS there's most likely problem in my part. When I turn off VPN I think that it has trouble getting back to default or something, but that's just my guess and I have no idea how can I ensure the default connection stays the same every time I disconnect from cryptostorm. I'm also not 100% sure but when I turn on my PC all default connections are fine.
