HOWTO: Cryptostorm on LXDE / Lubuntu / Debian-ish

Postby dfkt » Sat Nov 28, 2015 10:59 pm

This is the easy way, for the non-commandline-haxxor crowd. Well, only a little bit of commandline, but only for the initial setup.

OpenVPN should already be preinstalled on Lubuntu. For other Debian-based distros, do a:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install openvpn

Next you want the graphical OpenVPN network manager:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install network-manager-openvpn-gnome

Download a Cryptostorm OpenVPN configuration file from here: https://github.com/cryptostorm/cryptost ... tion_files

Download the certificate:
ca2.crt
(1.79 KiB) Downloaded 457 times

Open the Network Manager:

Press the "Add" button:

Choose "Import a saved VPN configuration..." and import the one you downloaded above:

Now you should have a window similar to this. Make sure you put your SHA512-hashed token in the username line (hash your token here). Use anything for the password (it shouldn't be blank). Import the certificate from above, and save:

Now you can either manually enable OpenVPN for your connection from the network icon in the task bar:

Or you can enable it to be used automatically all the time, via the Network Manager:

That's all, folks :^)

I just started running RoboLinux 8.7 Mate. When I hit the import button in the network manager for the .conf file, the network manager disappears and nothing happens. I believe Robo is Debian-ish. Any idea how to fix this? Thanks.

Sounds like it crashed. Try editing the .conf file, removing the <remote></remote> tags.
