howto: reinstall "zombie Tap driver" in Windows 7/8 widget installs

direct link: cryptostorm.org/zombietap
{we've split this off from the narwhal release announcement thread, as it's a question that comes up alot and the solution provided by this member has a 100% success rate in resolving what we've come to call the 'zombie Tap issue' with Windows 7/8 ~admin}

cryptostorm_admin wrote:edited: if this "missing Tap driver" issue occurs for you, we've reports that doing an install of the generic OpenVPN Windows client, which carries its own Tap driver installer, may be successful

There is no need to install the OpenVPN Windows client. Installing the TAP-windows driver (.exe) should be enough:
tap-windows-9.9.2_3.exe
(234.9 KiB) Downloaded 5538 times

Re: Tap driver mysteriously missing post-install

cryptostorm_admin wrote:We have received two reports (one from in-house testing) of a situation where the widget is installed and despite successful install, once connection is attempted there is no Tap driver present on the system. In the replicated example we have produced in-house, we can confirm that there is no Tap driver on the machine. This behaviour persists over multiple reboots and reinstalls.

I suspect it may be because of the older drivers' leftovers still remaining on the machine.

In case someone would like to give it a try:

1. Create a user environment variable "devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices" with value "1".
2. Reboot.
3. Go to the Device Manager; select "View" -> "Show hidden devices"; uninstall all possible TAP adapter leftovers under "Network adapters".
4. Reboot.
5. Try to install the widget again.

I did a test of the Narwhal version on a windows 7 64bit box without a previous openVPN install or TAP driver install.

so first install of the widget, i got this popup to install the TAP driver from open-vpn and then come back to the widget install.

after installing openVPN TAP driver, i tried again to install the widget but with no luck.

so what worked on this win box was to reboot it, at this point i had to specify that the newly discovered network was "home" and trusted.

then the windows widget connected very quickly to the darknet and well i'm answering this post from a secure connection and my IP is in Paris.

Should we be picky when it comes to 32bit or 64bit TAP driver?

OK, I have had my hissy fit. It still buckles, but if I exit the widget about 1 second after the dodgy IP comes up (I watch the details via VPNetMon), and try again, most of the time it works. I'd say 80% 2nd time, 20% 3rd time. I don't let it load, stall, error... I cancel if it buckles and retry the widget.
