Blocked/missing dns entries

Freewheeling spot to chew the fat on anything cryptostorm-related that doesn't fit elsewhere (i.e. support, howto, &c.). Criticism & praise & brainstorming & requests for explanation... this is where it goes when it's hot & ready for action! :-)

Blocked/missing dns entries

Postby nefertitus » Tue Apr 24, 2018 12:49 am

Hello!

When connected to CS I've noticed some ads etc. are gone (yay) without any extra effort, but unfortunately it seems some other sites (e.g. unity3d.com) are also unavailable (not yay). The DNS server simply responds with 0.0.0.0 when queried. I'm wondering what is the reason for this and is there a way to disable it?

Thanks,
Nefer

We use https://github.com/notracking/hosts-blocklists to provide the ad/tracker blocking, and sometimes legit sites get caught in it.

One way to bypass the ad blocking is to use any of the DeepDNS servers that don't have it enabled:

Code: Select all

# for x in `host public.deepdns.net|grep addr|awk '{print $NF}'`;do host unity3d.com $x 2>&1|grep addr|head -1|sed -e"s/^/$x: /";done

The ones above that resolve to 0.0.0.0 have it enabled, the rest don't.
But since unity3d.com probably isn't doing any malicious/invasive tracking, I'll add it to the whitelist.

One of these days I'll figure out a decent way to make the blocking optional on all the servers.
