DDOS attack on 2 e-mail providers (Protonmail & Runbox)

Freewheeling spot to chew the fat on anything cryptostorm-related that doesn't fit elsewhere (i.e. support, howto, &c.). Criticism & praise & brainstorming & requests for explanation... this is where it goes when it's hot & ready for action! :-)

DDOS attack on 2 e-mail providers (Protonmail & Runbox)

Postby thisis4thepeople » Fri Nov 06, 2015 1:04 am

You might have heard or were affected by a recent DDOS attack on the e-mail provider Protonmail from Switzerland. It began on November 3rd and has been over for a few hours now. I don't want to bore you with details, because the guys from Protonmail made a nice blog post here about the attack.

What I find very odd is that there was another DDOS attack on another e-mail provider, Runbox (blog post), from Norway. That one only took a few hours to fix, but what are the odds of two e-mail providers, who fight for security and privacy, getting attacked at nearly the same time?

Even more concerning are there news that more attacks might follow. Apparently they're not telling the whole story or know more than they can tell now.

Runbox just posted a new blog post, you can read it here.

It's interesting how they seem to have been attacked by the same people who asked Protonmail for money. The only difference seems to be that Runbox got everything under control and the company hasn't been attacked by a second entity.

According to VFEmail, another provider who got attacked, the people responsible call themselves Armada Collective. A blog post from Akamai has more info about the group.

I hold high regard for both protonmail and runbox.

I look forward to seeing each of these attackers prosecuted under Swiss, Norwegian and EU laws.
