CANADIAN ISPS AND VPNS NOW HAVE TO ALERT PIRATING CUSTOMERS

Freewheeling spot to chew the fat on anything cryptostorm-related that doesn't fit elsewhere (i.e. support, howto, &c.). Criticism & praise & brainstorming & requests for explanation... this is where it goes when it's hot & ready for action! :-)

CANADIAN ISPS AND VPNS NOW HAVE TO ALERT PIRATING CUSTOMERS

Postby VirtuosicVagabond » Sun Jan 04, 2015 6:14 am

http://torrentfreak.com/canadian-isps-v ... rs-150102/

The new law further causes trouble for VPN providers, who are now required to log customers for at least six months.

Any comment?

There's a lot of mumbling & swearing going on in the frozen north, and it's not just the 30 below weather :( What's Crypto got to say? Maybe they could be more objective...

Via our main twitter feed, we commented on this topic yesterday. Screenshot here:

The only reference anyone has ever made to this legislation covering "VPN services" is by Torrentfreak. They have never cited any outside source for their claim, nor have they responded to requests for where they are getting that assertion from. None of the legitimate reporting on the subject has ever mentioned "VPN services," nor is there any mention of them - or privacy services more broadly, in any legislative commentary we've been able to find. (note: if someone does find such a reference, please do share it here!)

It is worth noting that none of Torrentfreak's marketing-heavy, security-challenged "VPN service" advertisers are based in Canada. Many are based in the USA, where draconian secret laws require disclosure of "private" information - and where such disclosures have been shown to be commonplace and inescapable. Still, Torrenfreak routinely ranks its own advertisers as "secure," versus others who don't spend advertising money with them.

Whether this advertiser relationship is the driver behind Torrentfreak's imaginary "Canadian VPNs must log customer activity" reporting, or not, we leave to the reader to decide for herself.

Incidentally, it's of no relevance to cryptostorm either way; we do a big chunk of our financial processing in one province of Canada, and via sovereign entities geographically located within that province. However, we're not "based" in Canada any more than we're based in Berlin, or Lisbon, or Chicago. Despite that, it does rub us wrong to see Torrentfreak (by all appearances) simply making up a smear in order to puff up their shady, dishonest big advertisers. That's just bad business, and bad ethics.

That's how we see things, given the information we've been able to uncover so far.

Well then...

There's obviously some background information to this I was previously unaware of.

I'll be sure to pack a few extra "grains of salt" when reading certain sources in the future...

Good to know.

(The fact you're NOT based in the 'regime' of Canada, was a deciding factor ~ and goes to show you're not just a bunch of pretty faces.)

All the best <3

If you go to the next page, it is stated in section 41.26(1)(b).
