OpenVPN / Windows 7/8/8.1/10 & it's TAP/TUN Device problem

Postby Tealc » Sun Aug 09, 2015 3:33 pm

So once again, Microsh*t broke the TAP/TUN device in the new version of Windows 10, this happens since XP, every new version the same problem

Has I personally don't use the CS Widget, this tutorial will be for the OpenVPN software, BUT IT WILL WORK FINE for CS Widget since it's the same problem.

First let's remove ALL previous versions of OpenVPN & CS Widget or other programs that installs TAP/TUN devices.
Just go to "Add/Remove Programs" and search for programs that you know they will install that, for me it was: OpenVPN 2.22, TAP-Windows 9.21, CS widget & TeamViewer

Then go to your "Devices Manager" and erase any TUN/TAP devices you could find there.

Now let's install everything, please DO NOT ignore the previous step or this will not work.

1) Download OpenVPN latest from their download page here (You should chose the 32-bit or 64-bit, don't use the 32-bit/64-bit version if your system is only 32-bit) and install, don't forget to select the "OpenSSL Utilities" & "OpenVPN RSA" options!

2) Install the new TAP Windows Device and "Trust OPENVPN Techonologies software" - DO NOT START THE APPLICATION!

3) Go to the directory where you installed OpenVPN, normally its something like: "C:\Program Files\OpenVPN\bin"
Search for the "openvpn-gui.exe" and do "Properties" - "Execute has administrator"

4) Go to the desktop OpenVPN icon and right-click on it. Select “Advanced”
Then select "Execute has administrator"

5) Now you can either download the original OVPN conf's files or just grab mine from here, then go to the "C:\Program Files\OpenVPN\config" and put them there (it needs at least 2 files, the ovpn conf and the client.dat), don't forget to change the "client.dat" file and here it says "PUT HASHED TOKEN HERE" do that :lolno:

Cryptofree uses different ovpn files that don't require the insertion of a hash.

I hate to admit defeat but I can't seem to get past

"Route: Waiting for TUN/TAP interface to come up..." right before it's normally log on, it seems.

It'll go through that a bunch of times then say "Connected with errors (most likely TAP related") then try again.

I'm using widget build 3.0.0.64 (removed and reinstalled multiple times)
I've downloaded the latest openvpn build (removed and reinstalled multiple times)
Win 10
I've downloaded the Canada east and west config files from GitHub and tried logging on to both of those.
Have tried following this guide multiple times.

The only thing this guide mentions I don't have/haven't done is a "client.dat" file, which I can't find.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

This may sound stupid, but have you restarted your computer since you installed the Client? There are terminal TAP errors and windows that don't seem to be able to be fixed by anything but a restart.

I couldn't remember as I've done that several times this afternoon, so I just restarted it after you posted. Unfortunately, same result...

Have you tried, just for troubleshooting purposes, connecting via OpenVPN (instead of the CS client) using the .ovpn files that you can find on the github?

https://github.com/cryptostorm

I just want to know if your computer can't open the TAP adapter at all, or if its just a widget issue.

Tried a couple of different nodes and files in ovpn.

The _tcp file attempts to log on but get stopped up and re-attempts about every two minutes.

The _udp file looks pretty much like the widget's log file with the "waiting for the TUN/TAP"

Interestingly, I also tried the dynamic option and it said "Maximum number of 'remote' options (64) exceeded
Use --help for more information."

Don't know if this helps at all, but I was messing around with it some more and thought it connected but I couldn't get to any web sites.

The last two lines of the log were:
Wed Jan 11 16:00:55 2017 Initialization Sequence Completed With Errors ( see http://openvpn.net/faq.html#dhcpclientserv )
