Automatic, recurring token delivery now available

Looking for a bit more than customer support, and want to learn more about what cryptostorm is , what we've been announcing lately, and how the cryptostorm network makes the magic? This is a great place to start, so make yourself at home!

Automatic, recurring token delivery now available

Postby cryptostorm_team » Thu Feb 20, 2014 4:31 pm

Since our beta launch of cryptostorm last year, we've been asked often by members whether we'll offer "subscriptions" to the network. The answer is simple:

Nope.

For a host of procedural and technical reasons, subscriptions are a terrible idea for a security-centric service. There's just no way to provide that continuity-of-identity without also seriously compromising the transience & structural ephemerality of network interactions. Subscriptions mean customer databases, which mean payment information, which means RL identities, which is an instant target for a wide range of bad actors.

However...

After talking this thru with a wide range of network members, security specialists, payment systems designers, and paranoid OpSec obsessives, we've come to an alternative procedure to deliver most of the functionality of "subscriptions" without the downsides: recurring token deliveries.

Simply put, it's now possible to sign up for tokens to be delivered on a set schedule (monthly or yearly). As that temporal queuing isn't handled by cryptostorm nor are payment details viewed or retained by us (it's an external service offered by PayPal and others), there's no erosion of delivered security in doing so. Rather, from our standpoint at cryptostorm we simply receive a notice to send a token to a given email address... just as we do with most all our token delivery requests. The token gets queued out by our illustrious "tokenbot," and that's that. Whether that token request is the result of an externally-queued cron job, or a one-time purchase, is neither relevant to us at cryptostorm nor actually known to us whatsoever. Terminating such an arrangement is straightforward & handled by the outside service provider (PayPal, for now): as they manage the recurring billing, they're the ones to handle cancelling it as well. That's ideal, as it means there's never a concern that we'll drag our feet at cryptostorm when members choose to end a recurring setup - it's not our call, either way. For the best.

This feature has now been added on our main token purchase page. We've opened this thread, here in the forum, to expand discussions of this feature, as well as seek additional (i.e. non-PayPal) recurring payment processors that community & network members would like us to add in the future. There's no reason to be stuck with one, or two, or any limited number of such providers - we're happy to integrate whomever proves useful for members.

We have not yet implemented this ability for bitcoin-based token purchases, but are actively seeking service provides who can offer that functionality to network members.

Finally, we will not ever be offering "in-house" recurring token plans - that's simply not part of our security model, and there's no way to square the circle to make it so. Fortunately, we do not think that proves a barrier to providing this capability to members - via outside services, as noted above.

@CS

Very glad you've found a solution to this. It helps out members with smaller cashflows who can't afford to pay more upfront. Good stuff. :D
