Suggestions for VPN Router

Postby ch33t0s » Fri Feb 10, 2017 12:56 pm

Can anyone recommend a model or models of VPN Router that provide the following

Good VPN throughput preferably 50mbps+ absolutely minimum of 30mbps
Ethernet WAN port, not A/VDSL
Minimum of 4 switch ports
WiFi would be a bonus but can live without.

I know I wont find that in a consumer level product but building box is out the question as components are too expensive here plus space is a factor.

Never realised how much rubbish there was out there until I tried to find something decent for myself to use. Too used to just placing orders for Cisco routers and unfortunately getting one discounted through work isn't happening!

Couldn't agree more with @parityboy and his pfsense suggestion.

Another suggestion, dirt cheap but a hassle to setup: Raspberry Pi 3 with Jessie Lite image installed. Access Point + OpenVPN. There you go.

BUT: Wifi throughput with or without VPN could be better. You can find help to fix it (partly). I get ±30Mbit downstream (naked: 100Mbit). It's a known Raspberry Pi 3 issue, a lot of people complaining about it. CPU of Raspberry Pi 3 should be more than sufficient for a fast VPN connection, not sure what the problem is.
