Minor issue: recognition of VPN server location on youtube and google

Postby aliwon » Sun Nov 15, 2015 10:35 pm

Hi Guys,

I'm using Firefox on OS X, and have configured my VPN connection using your How-to on Tunnelblick.

I've been using CryptoStorm for a week now and I noticed that YouTube and Google are able to figure-out my real location, Malaysia. Netflix also thinks I'm from outside the U.S. although I'm using the CryptoStorm's Western-U.S VPN server.

On the other hand, I'm able to access BBC content using their iPlayer from CryptoStorm's London server. So this site works as correctly.

Each time I connect, I make sure to remove all history and cookies. I also check the VPN connection with CryptoStorm's test page. At this point, I'm unable to figure out what I need to do or to correct, and need your help.

I've tried to provide more information using screenshots below.

Postscript: YouTube seems to show the correct VPN correction after a certain amount of time, but, it's erratic. I feel something is leaking.

Thanks alot for your help,
aliwon

I'd look into how the firewall is set up on OS X, and also look to see if WebRTC is blocked in Firefox.

In the second screenshot, WebRTC is already deactivated.

Thanks

This also happens to me when I log in via Singapore; it shows up as Australia. It's fine when I log into Germany and a couple of others. I just assumed Singapore doesn't have a Youtube outlet.

All the other checks provide correct info, such as the CS Connection check and the IPLeak check.

what do you obtain when doing an initial visit to

cryptostorm.is/test ?

ip-lookup.net ?

Some FF extensions/ plug-ins that convert Youtube content may leak stuff.
also.. if you allow javascript to run .. there are ways to obtain your real ip in . Also, turn off Flash as you can watch in non-flv formats.

I would suggest you get a router from vpndark.net if you are very paranoid and face challenge in setting up a custom router with cryptostorm enabled. There are helpful guides in the forum that teach how to set up custom routers (if you wish to tinker away) :D

Got sick of seeing AU on Youtube via Singapore node, so jumped on another one and all is well now...

Awesome, VPNdarknet sells routers. Might have to hit him up for one.

I've made the changes you suggested:

Still no luck though.

I've made further checks to suggestions others have made, and have spotted a possible bug: a timezone mismatch. Please see this screenshot:

Is there anything I can do in the about:config portion of Firefox to remove the "local time" ? Enabling NoScript helps, but I need to turn ON scripting for youtube.

Solved the problem by disabling ipv6 leaks.

In /etc/ufw/sysctl.conf just add:

net.ipv6.conf.all.disable_ipv6 = 1
net.ipv6.conf.default.disable_ipv6 = 1
net.ipv6.conf.lo.disable_ipv6 = 1

Hi.

I can't find sysctl.conf in HD/private/etc. Where else can I look for it?

Thanks.

Sorry, I should have been more clear: The original post concerned Mac OSX; I don't have it leaking anymore after configuring the firewall.

I then found my Linux box leaking ipv6 DNS queries by checking http://ipv6leak.com
The changes to the sysctl.conf file I detailed above solved the ipv6 DNS leaks.
