Australian Mandatory Data Retention & Cryptostorm

Postby posty » Mon Oct 05, 2015 9:46 am

Hi everyone!

As you may or may not have heard, Mandatory Data Retention is coming to Australia on October 13th (that's the deadline all ISPs must be compliant, many may be compliant already).

Even though 98.8% of the Australian public, when asked do not want it, those explaining why we need it cannot articulate it well (from 2 mins onwards is the best part) except for hand-wavy 'national security' reasons. Regardless of it's effectiveness every Australian is going to get their metadata logged whether we like it or not if we don't do something about it.

People campaigned long and hard against it and continue to, but now we need to head into full on damage control mode.

Which is why I'm here, really.

This is a good opportunity for cryptostorm to take some action as a VPN vendor and lead the way in its activist friendly nature encourage others to reject the notion of having all of their traffic logged.

It would be a fantastic if cryptostorm did something special to mark the occasion of this degradation of our digital civil liberties and do some sort of promo, perhaps by temporarily kicking up the speed limiter on the cryptofree service, or temporarily turning off the limit. Or something else. just SOMETHING to mark the occasion.

I put this in 'support' in the hopes that those that run the service actually see this post, feel free to move to the rant section, but arguably this is a feature request, Australians need your support! :)

I'm sooooooo not looking forward to this...

What to do about landline and mobile... fkn, no one I know in real life gives a toss about this as much as me, which is infuriating to say the least. I ain't making or answering any calls anymore.

I thought about VOIP but after reading some privacy policies and terms & conditions, it put me off life.

Screw this!

eh. signal and facetime and I have some other more anonymous voip in my back pocket but not through any real proper provider - no.

why?

Also - Cheers for this. :)

just to clarify - does this mean that if you subscribe for weekly tokens you'll get 2 for 1 weekly tokens, or if you buy a one shot weekly token you'll get 2 tokens for one? it's not well expressed. or is it both? for how long :)

Looking for a VOIP in Australia that holds the same standards as CS in regards to privacy etc... been a tough task, reading policies and conditions makes wet dreams turn to horror stories...

I did when you told me about it! haha...

RedPhone requires Google Apps, according to the FAQ. Also according to the FAQ, catering to the non-Google lovers out there is not on their To Do list. So, I went and found a project or two on XDA-Dev forum that could help me...

MicroG GMSCore
NOGAPPS Project

Expected hurdle encountered; I need a Gmail account (duhhh!). So, off I go to Google to register an account. Bang, another hurdle. To register, they want my phone number for verification purposes. Like wtf...

So I gave up for the time-being... well, until I find some shrapnel church change and buy a disposable SIM card or something. Thanks for the info though VPND...

Ahh sorry for the doof suggestion, I'm running a phone without gapps currently, should have checked it out first.

There has to be something out there though, I'll carry on the search :)

lmao it is ok VPND, no need to apologise. If it wasn't for your suggestion, I wouldn't have found the two XDA-DEV projects. Hmmm, still gotta' get off my cheeks and get a temporary number...

Any thoughts or concerns on the latest move by regulatory bodies to shutter bitcoin (and alt-coin if any) processors and/or gateways Down Under :?:

Am just concerned over these developments.

As it gets increasingly tricky to make cryptopayments (unless it is sourced locally and paid manually - bypassing gateway providers).
