Icelandic Exit Node Dodgy Geolocation Phenomenon

Postby distant.prime » Sat Aug 02, 2014 7:50 pm

I'm based in Germany and I am currently in the process of evaluating yours' and others' VPN services, for a possible long term deployment for personal use. One of the reasons I want to use a VPN is to circumvent the geolocation censorship that we often experience here in Germany on YouTube. The following is a common received message when browsing YouTube media from a German IP:

"Unfortunately, this video is not available in your country because it could contain music from SME, for which we could not agree on conditions of use with GEMA."

GEMA is the German licensing agency for music content. YouTube and GEMA disagree about licensing fees and as a result YouTube prevents German IPs from viewing music videos and videos containing even fractions of licensed music. Personally I call this censorship for both viewers and artists/producers. Anyway, when I tunnel through to CyptoStorm's Icelandic Exit Node and connect to YouTube, for reasons that I can not explain, my browser (Firefox & Chromium) defaults to the German Geolocation, i.e.

https://www.youtube.com/?gl=DE

This is also true for Google, i.e.

https://www.google.de/

I find this very suspicious since this phenomenon only occurs for CyptoStorm's Icelandic Exit Node and on no other Exit Node that I have used until now.

What I experience normally when I use an Exit Node of a country that does not contain a "Geo-FrontPage" is in fact a default to the USA ('The Mothership'), for example: Google/Romania defaults to the USA.

Could someone please explain to me how this could be happening, i.e. according to Google/YouTube, how is it that CryptoStorm's Icelandic Exit Node know of my true geolocation? (or I am just being overtly paranoid and this is just a coincidence?)

I am using an OpenVPN tunnel via a pfSense Box where I'm running my own dns server to ROOT via a separate VPN tunnel that I validate at https://www.dnsleaktest.com/

Curious, I've just checked my connection on the Iceland Fenrir node, from outside of Germany, on Android.

The IP is returned as Iceland, but the DNS Germany.

Is this setting intentional?

@vpnDarknet

Most likely. The DNS servers are:

Code: Select all

198.100.146.51/Canada
213.73.91.35/Germany
91.191.136.152/Sweden

Thanks for the feedback.

The way I am implementing this test is just by typing "google" or "youtube" in my browser's navigation bar and letting the dns-server resolve even the domain.

I couldn't contact to your Swedish server but the Canadian one accepted my requests. I forwarded request there via a third party VPN located in Portugal and sadly I still have the same quirk happening. I'm trying everything I can think of and I still can't shake this exposure on the Icelandic Node off. :? Really Strange

Hi there.

So I've found that many "trace geolocate sites" use the cookies that are already in your computer, and so do google and youtube when you just put it in the address bar with no domain reference, that may change since some cookies are time based.
If you really want to now here is your connection coming from just go here http://www.tracemyip.org/ it's the site that I've found to be more reliable, and to completely ignore your "home location" use some king of "Private Mode" in Chrome, there are several javascripts that can find your location with your wifi signal by identifying your cable provider.

We have talked about this several time here in the forum, check out this:
