Help please: Can't figure out how to set up on Mac

Postby sfmal » Sat Feb 15, 2014 12:19 pm

Hi, please forgive my ignorance, I'm not trained or have any understanding of half the stuff you guys post on this forum... To be honest, all I want is a VPN service to watch Netflix and access other services in the USA as I've been living in Singapore for the last three years. I like the idea of added security and privacy, so I'd really like to get this set up correctly.

I was a Cryptocloud customer for over a year and only recently learned that they no longer exist when my VPN stopped working. When I originally set up VPN I downloaded some conf files and used Tunnelblick to connect. Now that I've paid for 6-months of Cryptostorm, all I have is a token (a 15 character alphanumeric string).

I've followed the directions to set up Tunnelblick posted here: viewtopic.php?f=37&t=4135. I downloaded the file cryptostorm_client_raw-locked1_3.conf

Side note: What is the difference between "locked" and "dynamic". I'm assuming the config files with city names are referencing locations where the servers are. I'd need to use a VPN with a USA IP address. Moving on...

When I try to double-click on the .tblk file with the config I downloaded it returns this error:

line 76: File does not exist: /private/var/folders/9t/0kksb1b90r30knk5z2c6j90w0000gn/T/TunnelblickTemporaryDotTblk-uzKnPZ/crypto.tblk/Contents/Resources/ca.crt

Okay, so I edit the file, creating folders within the .tblk package called Contents/Resources and copy-paste the stuff between the <ca> tags in the conf file I downloaded into a new file called Contents/Resources/ca.crt

Okay great that seemed to work. I get to the next screen asking if I want to install the configuration for all users or only me. I select Only me. Then I enter my password. The configuration was installed successfully.

I change the OpenVPN version to 2.3.2 as per the directions, then try to connect, getting this error:

Tunnelblick was unable to start OpenVPN to connect crypto. For details, see the log in the VPN Details… window

I look in logs and see this- I have no idea what this means:

2014-02-15 15:11:43 *Tunnelblick: OS X 10.9.1; Tunnelblick 3.4beta20 (build 3727); prior version 3.4beta18 (build 3704)

Can someone help me understand what I'm doing wrong?

Thanks for the response. I have been using the latest beta of Tunnelblick, and other help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks again!

It's been about a month since I paid for a 6 month subscription to this ridiculous service that I can't get working. No support. Nobody on the forums. Seriously, what did I pay for? By the way, someone I referred to cryptocloud somehow got a free 1 year account. Again, why am I paying for this??

All I get from the support people is "we don't know macs, try the forum" (paraphrasing) but the forum is dead.

So here I go again:

Please someone--ANYONE--can you you please please please look at my original post and try to help me. Cryptostorm support says there are people here who know something about Macs.

I'm sorry you're having difficulties getting Tunnelblick configured, but having just recently successfully set up cryptostorm on Mavericks, hopefully I can help a little. First of all, this post by Lignus is a great place to start. As he states, currently you have to use the Beta version of tunnelblick on Mavericks (which it looks like you are), so if you have previously tried the stable version, you likely need to run the uninstaller before attempting to install and configure the beta version. It looks like you are ok in this regard, but is important to note for anyone else having similar problems.

Since Lignus' guide covers most of the major points, I will throw in some pointers where I had issues that may also help you in the end.

  • use the config file he links to and copy it all (from the "Code:" section) into a TextEdit document. HOWEVER, by default it tries to save the file as a .rtf and adds all kinds of hidden characters which will give you problems later, so you need to strip them out. To do that, make the menu selection below:

    Screen Shot 2014-03-08 at 2.01.13 AM.png
    Screen Shot 2014-03-08 at 2.01.13 AM.png (42.89 KiB) Viewed 4208 times

Once you've done that, you can save the file and give it the needed ".conf" file extension (Personally I would say this is likely where your problem lies, as it looks as though you might have used the wrong config file initially)
  • Another issue you may run into deals with this line from the config file
    Screen Shot 2014-03-08 at 2.06.38 AM.png
    Screen Shot 2014-03-08 at 2.06.38 AM.png (7.92 KiB) Viewed 4208 times

This previously worked without issue on Snow Leopard, but with Mavericks I had to explicitly point to a location to save the file. For example, mine says "log /Users/cryptostorm_support/Desktop/devnull.txt", which saves the file to my desktop, but you can put it elsewhere if you like.
  • When creating the hash from your token MAKE SURE you remove the "Your token..." in its entirety from the input field as any characters that remain when putting in your token will influence the hash output

Let us know if this helps you fix your issue.
