After many months of work & some unexpectedly ugly behind-the-scenes issues involving a former team member, it is with weary gratitude that we are finally able to confirm the final shutdown of the former "Cryptocloud Secure Networking" service (which everyone called "Cryptocloud VPN" - even though we hate that name). Tango down.
Two important matters:
First, all prior customers of Cryptocloud will continue to receive no-cost network membership and full migration to cryptostorm. Contact our support folks via your preferred channel, and we'll get you set up - we've been working through this process for several months and even more so in recent days. We apologise deeply for those who saw "automatic payments" charged to them by "Cryptocloud" in recent months, despite the fact that the network was being decommissioned. These charges were not authorised by us, and none of those funds came to our team or our company since last August. We have done everything in our power to stop that process, ever since. Irrespective, we offer our apology for the hassle it has caused to former Cryptocloud members who saw funds pulled from their wallets for a service in mid-shutdown.
Second, it is an understanding that an official statement regarding the shutdown is shortly to be posted elsewhere by the... other party involved in this situation. We are going to keep this post, here & on behalf of the entire cryptostorm team (who also founded & ran Cryptocloud, since 2007), short and limited so that we do not speak over top of that other pending statement. If and when there's additional need to expand on, discuss, and explore this topic in further detail we'll be happy to do so, here in a parallel thread in a suitable subforum. As always. But doing so prior to that official statement would be neither polite nor really useful.
There you go. It was a wonderful ride. We created a real network security service, in 2007, at a time when people routinely pimped PPTP as "secure" and customers assumed there weren't better options available. There were... and now, in some small way thanks to our groundbreaking work with Cryptocloud, there are: cryptostorm is one, but there's a whole world of services out there (some good, most bad... but all new since 2008). Our role in creating the "VPN industry" has been somewhat eclipsed by new generations of marketing-heavy, tech-lite, SEO-driven, customer-betraying, DMCA-kowtowing "VPN services" that get tons of press from "journalists" who cash advertising checks from them every month, as well. So be it. Our goal has never been to claim credit for anything - our goal has been to change the world, for the better.
It still is.
As we said last year, Snowden's revelations showed us that Cryptocloud's framework - groundbreaking in 2008 - was not going to be able to stand up against the $50+ billion, flagrantly illegal firepower being brought to bear by the NSA and other gone-rogue global spy agencies. To upgrade the old network to a level sufficient to do so would be all but impossible, whilst still providing service on the platform: changing the tyres at 200km/hour. This is why we built cryptostorm from a blank slate: no corners cut, no compromises due to legacy code or legacy assumptions.
It hasn't been an easy road, for us or for some customers. But it has been the right road, and now we have a secure network unmatched in providing serious, reliable, high-performance network security for every member. With the final closure of Cryptocloud, that chapter ends. The new chapters have already been spooling out, one after another, in a collaborative & community-driven process, since last August.
Let's keep writing new chapters, and thereby craft a new narrative that places control and authority back with real human beings when it comes to our private online lives. Enough of the corporate fascist, spy-mania, Orwell's-nightmare bullshit of helplessness in the face of dragnet surveillance. Technology made that mess... but technology is even better-suited to fixing it. No "permission" needed from the 0.1% elite who think they can trick us into believing our lives are theirs to control.
Enough of all that nonsense. Now we swing the pendulum back the other way...
