Issue Accessing Sony Online Entertainment

Postby parityboy » Sun Feb 09, 2014 8:59 pm

Trying to access Sony Online Entertainment from the VPN connection results in a hanging browser, which eventually times out. Accessing the same URI from outside of the VPN network has no issues. It's not a DNS issue, because I also tried specifying the IP address, with the same result.

I've also just tried accessing it from an Android phone running OrBot - works perfectly, so I don't think they are blocking proxies. It may be a routing issue; I'm using the Frankfurt exit node....ok, yeah it looks like a routing issue. The Iceland exit node works fine.

We've seen a couple of these - Network Solutions has presented issues, on and off - and our initial read is that they have to do with script-intensive sites running over SSL that implements session parameters which conflict with the TLS-layer session management implicit in cryptostorm's packet NATting on darknet egress.

That said, the fact that you had a clean load on Iceland's cluster, but not Frankfurt, might be instructive. There's recently been an upgrade of Frankfurt's kernel-level networking parameters (to sysctl.conf version 1.6), which may have taken place just after you tested that pageload. Given that, does the page still fail to load from Franfurt for you this evening? Have you flushed local routes/route parameters lately?

Thank you,

Sony's security still sucks (h/t @LulzSec)

Postby Baneki » Mon Feb 10, 2014 4:29 am

It's also not helping that their "secure" web browsing certs are a total mess. Invalid expiry dates, invalid creation dates, mismatch with canonical TLD and subdomain mappings... given that Sony's been pwned by folks over and over in years past ([viz LulzSec & Co.), it's somewhat astonishing that this is such a disaster at this point in time.

But, hey, as a global multinational they can just call on taxpayer funded police, investigative agencies, and military spy organizations to hunt down any kids who exploit these amateur-level flaws in security. Because, really, why bother to invest in secure foundations when you can just foist off the cost of being exploited on the world's taxpayers?

Pathetic.

@Baneki

Just tried it today from the Frankfurt exit node: same result. This virtual machine was shutdown for a couple hours yesterday while the host was performing a RAID resync, so the guest OS routing tables were definitely flushed. :)

@cryptostorm_ops

The same site linked previously works perfectly from the Montreal exit node, so there is obviously an issue between the Frankfurt exit node and SOE.
